Trina and Teresa begged the fireman to
Rescue their kitten, Charlie.
The crack and pop of multiple fireworks
Sent the creature charging up a tree.
Their neighbours were the worst.
Fireworks during the day, in the middle of summer.
They know Charlie’s only three weeks old.
Probably did it as a joke.
When mum finds out
They’re in big trouble. First,
Charlie’s got to come down from that big old tree.
‘Eric, please. You’re a nice neighbour. Help us.’
Two minutes ago Eric pulled into his drive opposite,
after a long shift at the local fire station.
Sleep is calling.
He can barely keep his eyes open.
Please Eric, please.
Alright, he’ll do it.
Eric crossed the road, walked
along the side of the house to the girls’ back garden.
At the top of a beech tree taller
than their two storey house, sat a kitten, meowing…
